Review: Pixar Takes Buzz in a New Direction, but Has Plenty of Nods to His ‘Toy Story’ Fanbase

Pixar makes a big return to the screen this month, and with an origin story of one of its most beloved characters. “Lightyear” is a film about Buzz Lightyear. However, it is not the “Toy Story” character; it’s based Buzz’ character, who prompted a toy company to manufacture the action figure in the first place. This is why the character is voiced by Chris Evans, rather than Tim Allen, as it is not the lovable Buzz we know from his adventures with Woody and the gang.

The film follows a group of space rangers who are on a special mission; Buzz is partnered with his best friend Alisha (voiced by Uzo Aduba) who is constantly mocking him. Before every mission, the two touch fingers and recite the iconic Pixar line of “To infinity and Beyond” —  a special nod to the iconic “Toy Story” series, and some familiarity to the audience who will mostly be fans of those films. The team goes to an uncharted alien planet, where Buzz has crash-landed. While Alisha and company stay on the planet, Buzz tries to fix their hyperdrive system and get them back home. However, every leap into hyperdrive sends Buzz four years into the future. So, Alisha ages and moves on with her life — but Buzz is frozen in time.

Humor, Action, and Nods to its ‘Toy Story’ Fanbase

When it was announced that there would be an origin story of Buzz Lightyear, fans were confused why Tim Allen would not be reprising the role. However, Chris Evans is very well known for already playing superheroes, and particularly one who has unprocessed trauma. The film’s plot does take an emotional turn. Evans showcases this in his vocal range; from the joy of being with his best friend to panic from realizing that he is frozen and unable to live in the real world. Other standouts in the cast are Keke Palmer and Taika Waititi, who bring their comedic chops to their characters. This is particularly true of Waititi; he brings a wacky unpredictability, which contrasts very well with the often stern and heroic Buzz.

‘Toy Story’ will not be disappointed by the latest Pixar outing.”

The film — even though is an origin story of a well-known character — does allow for new characters to emerge and be a new adventure for Pixar. However, “Lightyear” does pay tribute to the Buzz we know and love with iconic lines, the costume, and the gadgets; due to this, fans of “Toy Story” will not be disappointed by the latest Pixar outing.
