“Midnight in the Switchgrass” is a crime thriller about FBI agents and a local officer who team up to solve an unsolved case about a brutal serial killer who is attacking young women. The film is producer Randall Emmett’s directorial debut and stars Emile Hirsch, Bruce Willis, Megan Fox, and Lukas Haas.
The audience is immediately introduced to the unsolved mysteries and current open cases/characters; however, the tone and pace of the entire movie is very distracting because of the inconsistency. You can easily tell that its Emmett’s first time directing; it’s unfortunate because the film had a lot of potential based off the premise and leading cast.
There was nothing aesthetically pleasing about what was on-screen, whether it was camera angle, frame, or lighting. The cast did what they could with the script and it felt as if Bruce Willis was underused. His character seemed unnecessary and forgotten most of the time, which felt like a total waste of talent.
Overall, the “Midnight in the Switchgrass” wasn’t great and it felt forced when trying to finish it. It had a lot of potential due to the cast and concept; however, it ultimately fails due to its inconsistent cinematography and its script. It could have been so much better.
Lukas Haas and Emile Hirsch stole the show if anything, but that’s a given considering how amazing of actors they are. Haas’ acting was great as the creepy truck driver serial killer with a family back home and I wish that he had a better platform to display his talent because he’s really good at playing complex psycho characters. His character was probably the only interesting role in the film and you almost wish the film was just about him. It’s honestly no wonder Machine Gun Kelly, who also was in the film, refused to promote it.
