Director Erick Oh has another special short film on his hands with “Namoo,” created as an ode to his grandfather’s passing. This comes immediately after Oh’s Academy Award nomination for “Opera.”

In “Namoo,” the film beautifully weaves through the seasons to show the passage of time. This is as we see the life of an artist from beginning to end. The tree of life – with “Namoo” meaning tree in Korean – is at the centre of it all.

The attention to detail in the short is amazing as we’re brought through this journey, in an adventure that balances tone so well as each portion is separated by mood or by season. The amount of objects they fit on the tree of life is one of my favourite aspects of the film; but the music by Zach Johnston and Matteo Roberts complements everything so well and helps bring the wordless short to life.

For the film, I was able to speak with writer/director Erick Oh, as well as one of the film’s producers Kane Lee, who is also the Head of Content at Baobab Studios. Baobab Studios is the production company for the film. In the conversation, Erick Oh talked about the inspiration behind the story and finally being ready to tell this story. They also talked about their favourite objects on the “tree of life”. We talked about the music of the film and that collaboration, as well. There’s more in between, too.

You can either listen to the conversation below or click above to watch our conversation on YouTube.

“Namoo” is available now to watch as part of a Shorts Pass on Tribeca at Home, and you can find out more by going here.
