40 years of ‘Top Gun’ and Why the Hit that Almost Wasn’t Continues to Stay with Us

With poise, panache and an extra bit of flamboyance, it’s been 40 years since Pete “Maverick” Mitchell took to the skies, roaring and blistering in his F-14 Tomcat. “Top Gun” has transformed from a sleeper hit to one of the most beloved blockbusters, so much so that it spawned a superior successor, turned Tom Cruise into a household superstar, and created a generation of aviation geeks who could aptly differentiate the Spitfire from the Blackbird.

However, the film was initially shelved, as those at the helm found it to be too corny and devoid of substance. It was the adamancy of one Jerry Bruckheimer that realized the vision, and it now holds the record as Paramount’s most successful film. From repudiation to global recognition, we look at how Top Gun was created and the enduring legacy it has left behind over the last four decades.

    Origin

Stretched across the rugged desert, 200 kilometers south of Los Angeles, is the US Naval base Miramar, just on the periphery of San Diego. Nicknamed “Fightertown USA,” the base was a result of the humiliation of the US armed forces during the Vietnam War, and a key aerial and terrestrial training ground during the Cold War. Amidst the secrecy, a young, zealous journalist named Ehud Yonay secured the passes to interview aviators of the U.S. Navy.

The result was an 11-page article in California magazine, titled “Top Gun,” containing the ins and outs of aerial maneuver techniques and the lives of fighter pilots. The magnum opus caught the attention of Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson and soon had Paramount convinced to set things in motion.

    Movie Review

“Top Gun” opened to mixed reviews from the critics, while audiences went above and beyond to show their love and adulation. It sits at a modest 57% approval rating from critics at Rotten Tomatoes. Analysts have shown their admiration for the aerial combat scenes and hailed them as ground-breaking and visionary; however, the character buildups and over-dramatized romantic scenes were likewise criticized.

“Top Gun” went on to gross over 357 million USD at the Box Office, making it the highest-grossing movie of that year. But the Box Office numbers and discussions aside, “Top Gun” has since gone on to establish itself as a cult classic.

    A Stellar Soundtrack

Every discussion of “Top Gun” will remain half-done without shedding light on its brilliant, soul-stirring musical score. The film’s score evidently gets into the top ten most memorable ones ever, with the likes of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” trilogy. It was era-defining, an era that shouted the need for speed and adrenaline.

Close your eyes and imagine a mist-covered horizon, a jet taking its stance as the whisper of Harold Faltermeyer’s classic chimes out — it is nostalgia, pure wistful remembrance of a bygone era. Conversely, Kenny Loggins crafts an anthem out of his “Danger Zone,” a perfect background for the heart-thumping aerial dogfights and any similar situation we mere terrestrial mortals might find ourselves in. Compare that to the ethereal longing of “Take My Breath Away,” and we can sense why the Academy felt the album was deservedly the winner. Faltermeyer created a living monument of cinematic greatness, and it transcended any mediocrity extant within the initial film. Add to that One Republic’s defining summer anthem in the second installment, and there remains no doubt as to why “Top Gun” viewing is one of the most epic experiences in life.

    Gorgeous On-screen Performances

“Top Gun” was not the pioneer in the genre of swashbuckling, heavily-budgeted action extravaganza. But it did shape how a lot of subsequent films would like to present themselves. Tom Cruise was just a young actor trying to make his way through, and seemed baffled by his choices until he hit the jackpot. His stylish leather jacket, the aviators and the cheeky jawbones that magnetically enhanced his smile — Tom Cruise was the style statement that this movie wanted fighter pilots to be portrayed as.

‘Top Gun’ will be celebrated for eons to come as a gem, as an absolute cult classic.

It was so gorgeous and exquisitely beautiful that, to some eccentric critics, “Top Gun” was a gay masterpiece in its own right too. Coupled with the late Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis, the atmosphere created in the theatres was extraordinary. Four decades later, “Top Gun: Maverick” upped everything a notch higher with the stellar ensemble of Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, and Monica Barbaro. This was along with Cruise, who has broken and set records of unparalleled action stunts that remind us what an alluring and attractive spectacle the movies are. It’s, quite unquestionably, the definition of a voguish movie.

The legacy of the movie is a paradox. Gen Z viewers like me grew up with Cruise’s superhuman stunts and thus revere the glitz and glamour of the movie; critics, however, were ready to dismiss it as a mere aviator ad and jingoistic U.S. marketing after their shocking loss in Vietnam. Audiences rarely took heed of that, as the Box Office numbers show us. The golden-hour cockpit, inverted salutes and beach volleyball — entrenched in our minds as proof of cinematic aristocracy.

Reports of naval recruitment surging by 500% after the movie circulated throughout the news outlets. Bomber jackets and aviators were not just staples in the market; they were the market for a long time. Callsigns were part of daily vocabulary, and they became a staple of a boys’ time out, alongside football and cars.

    The Definitive Cult Classic

The elegy, “Top Gun: Maverick’s” quintessential success, was thus not a shock; it was inevitable. The ’80s are, from the perspective of Millennials and Gen Zers, the best time to be alive, and the nostalgia is bankrolled heavily, evident in the recent “Stranger Things.” However, none so influential, so noteworthy, so prized as “Top Gun.”

“Top Gun” was rarely a single thing. It was a contradiction, a spectacle and a mirror. It endures because we can experience it in a new way every single time, and multiple viewings only strengthen the conviction that the need for speed is actually what keeps us alive in life. “Top Gun” will be celebrated for eons to come as a gem, as an absolute cult classic.
