It’s a baking competition with an exception. The cakes created are all horror themed. And not just a sheet cake with a ghost made of frosting. The concoctions that these artists come up with are unfathomable. Think raspberry sauce blood shooting out of the mouth of an edible swamp witch clutching the skull of a gator.
And like icing on a cake, the series is hosted by Matthew Lillard. There’s no one more fun, likeable, and horror-invested than Lillard, who rose to stardom with his performance in “Scream.”
Lillard is joined by American Food & DIY Artist Nikk Alcaraz, and scream queen Danielle Harris (“Halloween 4,” “Halloween 5”) who serve as judges. The creations made are gruesome, stylistic, and a sight to behold.
The format follows standard reality shows. Lillard delivers a horror task with specific requirements, and the bakers go to work. There isn’t a ton of cast depth due to the truncated nature of the series, but we get bits and pieces of each player and team. Where they are from, where they work, what brought them to horror.
“Killer Cakes” is digestible (pun intended) with only 2 episodes. I’m hoping next year the show will return and stay longer. Its creative, fun, and certain to get your taste buds salivating.
