You are in the store minding your own business. You calmly look at the new releases. A title catches your eye. “Bring it on: Cheer or Die.”
Part of you knows this movie is garbage yet you buy the movie.
Terrible in a good sort of way
Yes, friends, his is the seventh installment of the “Bring it On” series that became a success in 2000. It bills itself as a horror movie, leaving the comedy behind…or did it? The movie has a staggering 20% on Rotten Tomatoes and therefore I liked it.
The basis of the film of course centers around the “Diablo” cheerleading squad and their quest for world domination. We quickly learn about a cheerleading stunt gone deadly and a cheerleading ban being placed on the squad, meaning we can spend time together at games but do not even think about using that pom-pom, Amber.
The Diablos are determined to put the spirit back in spirit fingers and decided to use an abandoned school to practice for regionals. At this point, I am committed to this train wreck, so…. a killer stalks the cheerleaders and knocks them off one at a time.
Good clean slasher fun
Now, the kills are decent, a beartrap, a good ole fashioned ax to the bank, a hanging, and some archery. Of course, we find the team stranded and locked in the building with their killer…or killers. Yes, good old-fashioned revenge, we find a set of twins stalking the rest of the survivors and find that the principal of the school took in the twins and taught both to pity and seek revenge of cheerleaders.
Why may you ask?
Principal Simmons (played by actor Missi Pyle) was wronged as a cheerleader. I mean that’s reason enough to seek revenge. What annoyed me most about this film is seeing the text messages on screen that are being sent to each other, its always been a pet peeve, so clearly this film is billed for young adults.
I am torn with my reaction to this film. Its taking a fresh and bold take on a twenty-year-old series but let us be honest, I have seen better acting in a porn film and with an unknown cast, this movie leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. However, I was still entertained.
