As another year comes to an end, the cinema is filled with films that are fighting their way to be acknowledged this award season. The Golden Globe nominations being announced yesterday is the start of that time.
The Globes have had a difficult few years, given recent controversy about their lack of diversity. This led to them not being televised last year, with many high profile actors such as Tom Cruise giving back their awards. However, the awards ceremony is back, and has added over hundred new members. This may allow for unique nominations, and for some films to be in the conversation that might not have had the chance to be acknowledged.Â
“The Banshees of Inisherin” leads the back with eight nominations, and four of those are for acting, as it is an incredible ensemble of Irish talent. Following it, is the exceptionally original sci-fi comedy drama “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The film has six nominations, and is a real testament to the new members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), as the film defies the normal tropes for an award season film.Â
However, no women have been nominated for ‘Best Director’ this year, and none of the films in the drama and musical/comedy category are directed by women either. The biggest snub in this category is Sarah Polley for “Women Talking,” which was completely shut out of the big categories. However, it did manage to get a ‘Best Screenplay’ nominee. This is a surprise given that female directors were prior having a resurgence in the award circuit, with Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion.Â
Films that do very well in award season are typically films about Hollywood, and this year “Babylon” and “The Fablemans” are those two. Damien Chazelleâs lavish party “Babylon,” had mixed reactions from its first showings, but did manage to gain acknowledgement in three acting categories and in ‘Best Comedy/Musical.’ Also, “The Fabelmans”âwhich is Steven Spielbergâs most personal film about his love for moviesâwas nominated for five awards and is sure to be a big win for Spielberg, who is an awards favorite.Â
The major acting categories are still unclear as to who the front runners are, but there is a lot of incredible talent to be sure. For example, Brendan Fraser, who is having an incredible comeback; but his chances of winning the Globe may be slim as he is boycotting the awards due to past issues. Other contenders in the ‘Best Actor Drama’ category are Hugh Jackman, Jeremy Pope, and first time nominees Bill Nighy and Austin Butler. The latter’s inclusion in this category is surprising, as he sings and dances in “Elvis.” However, Butler is being acknowledged for his dramatic work in the film, and this could lead him to be nominated for other awards.Â
