Lindsay Lohan is under Netflix’s control for the rest of her life. The actress debuted with the streaming giant in 2022 with “Falling for Christmas” and demonstrated it’s a perfect fit for the next phase of her career. She can perfectly portray the cute and quirky lead for any style of romantic comedy.
“Irish Wish” was written by Kirsten Hansen and directed by Janeen Damian and debuted at number one on Netflix’s most watched films upon dropping. It received a limited theatrical release at the Bay Theater in Los Angeles.
Yes, there is a plot
Maddie (Lohan) is the editor for world famous novelist Paul Kelly (Alexander Vlahos). Maddie is secretly in love with Paul, but before she can convey her emotions, he falls for her best friend (Ayesha Curry).
Now saddled as a bridesmaid, Maddie travels to Paul’s homeland of Ireland for an extravagant wedding. Spoiler alert – things aren’t going to go as planned.
The film offers a mix of Irish folklore with modern amenities. And there’s a fantastical twist I enjoyed. We get a nice blend of the settings, chaotic and materialistic New York City and the breathtaking beauty of Ireland.
The movie was filmed on location in various places, including Dublin, Lough Tay, Westport’s town square and the Cliffs of Moher. Five minutes in, and you’ll want to book a flight.
Lindsay Lohan is the star, and the reason everyone is watching. Lohan has the ability to combine sentiment with laughs – the Maddie character is a clutz and physical comedy is included. Ed Speleers plays a romantic interest in photographer James Thomas and has a great rapport with Lohan. Screen legend Jane Seymour adds a nice touch as Maddie’s mom but is sadly underused.
The story has a fantasy element, which I didn’t expect. The twist is different, and you’ll have to experience that for yourself. The writing is weak. Its as if they decided Ireland offers a great setting and we have Lohan under contract so let’s make a movie. But its fine.
There’s not much else to say.
“Irish Wish” is exactly what one would expect knowing what the movie is. It’s predictable and cheesy but funny enough to enjoy. It can help bridge the gap if you are longing for holiday movies of this style Xmas stuff. I wouldn’t mind having these sentimental stories year-round.
