Day 4 marks the series’ entry into hi-definition. And it shows. The entire production feels sharper, stronger, and more involved than any of the prior seasons. It’s also the most consistent season thus far. There are high and low points but overall, it remains close to the horizon.

Jack Bauer (Keiger Sutherland) returns to CTU—but this time he works directly for James Heller, the Secretary of Defense. The addition of the James Heller character—played by William Devane—is a nice organic change after three seasons of President Palmer.

William Devane brings new energy to the character, and unintentional humor with his over-the-top acting and antics throughout the day.

Jack’s love interest is Audrey Raines (Kim Raver) who becomes a key character in the series going forward. Raver is a solid actress and lends creditability to the ever-morphing cast of characters.

Mary Lynn Rajskub returns as fan favorite Chloe and is joined by fellow introverted analyst Edgar (Louis Lombardi). Roger Cross makes his debut as Curtis Manning. There’s a complete reset with the CTU staff and the new additions all wok well for the show.

The threat comes from a terrorist named Habib Marwan (Arnold Vosloo). Marwan is not my favorite villain the series has to offer. In a changeup, he’s the primary antagonist for the entire season, and often appears more unrealistic than the awesome bad guys the show has displayed so far.

Season 4 matches the enjoyment of Season 3, but with far lighter emotional tones.
