The shape-shifting commercial smash “Everything Everywhere All At Once” leads the upcoming Oscars with 11 nominations, including one for ‘Best Picture,’ ‘Best Director,’ and four total in three acting categories. Among the other ‘Best Picture’ nominations, the flavor varies from big-budget blockbusters (“Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Top Gun: Maverick”) to introspective character studies (“The Fabelmans,” “The Banshees of Inisherin”) to arthouse provocations (“Tár,” “Triangle of Sadness,” “Women Talking”). Netflixâs “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Bazâd biopic “Elvis” round out the category.Â
After a bountiful Golden Globes haul, the casts of “Everything” and “Banshees” dominated the acting categories, each film commanding four total slots. The only other films with multiple performers nominated were “The Fabelmans” and “The Whale.” The ‘Best Actress’ nominations is headlined by Cate Blanchette (“Tár”) who has won two Oscars already, Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”), who has four previous nominations, and newcomers Michalle Yeoh (“Everything”), Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), and Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), whose nomination for her turn as an alcoholic single mother benefitted from a grassroots campaign spearheaded by the likes of Jane Fonda and Gwenyth Paltrow.Â
First-Time Nominations Show Some Surprises
In the ‘Best Acting’ categories, veterans Colin Farrell (“Banshees”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”) are all receiving the first nominations of their decades-long careers. Theyâre accompanied by rising newcomers Austin Butler (“Elvis”), and Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”). Six of the ten supporting nominations are in “Banshees” (Kerry Condon for actress, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan for actor) and “Everything” (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu as actress, and front runner Ke Huy Quan as actor).Â
All of the men in the ‘Best Director’ category also had films in the ‘Best Picture’ race. With his tenth ‘Best Director’ nomination, Steven Spielberg breaks a tie with Martin Scorsese for second most of all time, behind William Wylerâs 12. Spielberg is the only person to receive nominations in six decades. The other directors â Todd Field, Martin McDonagh, Ruben Ãstlund, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert â are first-time nominations in the category.Â
The 95th Academy Awards will air on March 12th in Los Angeles. Below is a full list of nominees. Later this week, weâll continue our coverage with an article about this yearâs biggest headlines, including a summary of the surprises and snubs.Â
