Mye Hoang’s furry documentary “Cat Daddies” opened in New York City on October 14th. As documentaries go, it was engaging. This is a film about really two subjects (though it underlines dozens more during its run-time): cats and their male owners. At The Movie Buff we were lucky enough to watch and review the film, which you can read in the above link. “Cat Daddies” takes you on a tour of cats, cat owners, and the ways in which these furry felines make their owners’ lives better.

Through “Cat Daddies,” Filmmaker Mye Hoang—without editorializing—paints a picture of love for us. Sure, the cats are cute. However, the real joy of the documentary is discovering how the cats came to connect to their owners to begin with, and the many adventures they are taken on. Some, like Zulu, have survived fires and relocations. Others, like Flame, guard firehouses and boost firefighters’ morale. And still others, like Lucky, save the life of a homeless man living in New York City in ways that can only be seen and not explained.

    The Interview

Last week, I was lucky enough to speak to Director Mye Hoang about her documentary and her motivations. The interview is fun, just like the film, and uncovers some of the hardships of filming the movie (finding the cats, locations, etc.), as well as some logistical issues (getting the cats to stay still!).

Additionally, Hoang talks about the film’s theatrical release, and her hopes that people will get to see the film. For those who missed our review of the film, “Cat Daddies” opened on October 14th in New York City at the Village East by Angelika. After that, it will follow up with an opening in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Glendale theater on October 21st. The film will then expand to further theaters later this fall.
