Award season is in full swing now; just a day after the Golden Globes, the nominations for the SAG Awards have been announced. The Golden Globes are a good prediction of what will be nominated at other award ceremonies, particularly the Oscars, so we will see how the SAG nominations fare out.
It seems to be a new era for the SAG Awards, as they are trying to make the show more accessible and modern than ever. The nominations were announced on Instagram Live (it is the 3rd year they have done this), and announcing the nominees were Ashley Park and Haley Lu Richardson, two young stars from the breakout series “Emily In Paris” and “The White Lotus,” respectfully. Also, it was announced before the Instagram live that Netflix and the SAG Awards were partnering together, and the award ceremony was to stream on their YouTube channel, allowing for a global audience to tune in and watch the event.
Some Expected Nominations, but Some Surprises
The two films that they received the most nominations were “The Banshees of Insherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which received five nominations each. In both films, all the main actors were commended for incredible work in their films. Also, both films are up for the biggest award of the night, ‘Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture,’ which is the equivalent of Oscar’s ‘Best Picture.’ The Scree Actors Guild likes to support their own and honour everyone that was in the winning film.
Notable candidates nominated were Austin Butler and Cate Blanchett, who won awards at the Golden Globes on January 10th for their dramatic work. Again, they are both up against stiff competition in their categories at the SAG Awards. With the Golden Globes, they separate the films genres into drama and comedy/musical, but the SAG’s don’t; therefore it will be the first time that Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh will be competing in the same category. It will be interesting to see if the SAGs award one of their conventional films, or prefer to honour a film like Yeoh’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which is unique and creative and something that prior would never have been seen as an award contender.
In the ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role’ category, Brendan Fraser and Colin Farrell were nominated — as they have been in all the major award shows — for “The Whale” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” respectively. They are both Austin Butler’s toughest competition.
Adam Sandler Shocks; Michelle Williams/Margot Robbie Left Out
As always with award shows, they were some notable snubs but also some surprise nominees. The most surprising was Adam Sandler for “Hustle,” who has been acknowledged in the ‘Outstanding Actor’ category. His performance was widely applauded and he has been doing more dramatic work of recent, but it was not a role that screamed awards season. The SAG nominees are voted by actors, and Sandler is known for being a good and kind person, so this may be a reason as to why he was nominated in this category.
The biggest snubs were in ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Leading Role’ category, which didn’t see Michelle Williams for “The Fablemans” or Margot Robbie for “Babylon,” who were both expected for a nomination, as they are two of the biggest films of this season. Instead the nominations went to Viola Davis for “The Woman King” and Ana de Armas for “Blonde.” Both of those films were mixed in their reviews, but their performances were celebrated so it is a welcome surprise to see both of them here.
The SAG Awards
The SAG Award ceremony will be on Sunday February 26th, 2023. Viewers will be keen to see if they side with the Globes on their winners or if they decide to surprise us and shake up the Oscar race.
