Exclusive Interview: In Conversation with Simon Barrett, Writer and Director of ‘Seance’

“Seance” is a new Exclusive Shudder release, written and directed by Simon Barrett, who has written such projects as horror hits “You’re Next” and “The Guest,” both directed by his longtime collaborator Adam Wingard. This time, Barrett gets in the director’s chair for his first feature film as director (after directing  “Tape 49,” a short sequence in the horror anthology film “V/H/S/2“).

The film stars Suki Waterhouse as Camille Meadows, who arrives at an all-girls’ boarding school, Fairfield Academy, after the accidental death of a student. The school has rumours of ghost stories, as all schools do. One night, during detention, six of the friends try to call the spirit of their dead friend with a makeshift Ouija board (using pink lipstick as the utensil). After this, one of the friends is found dead in the morning and it launches that mystery…

The Movie Buff’s staff writers Daniel Prinn and Arpit Nayak were able to speak with Simon Barrett about Seance, which is now available to stream on Shudder. They spoke to him about the experience working on his first project in the director’s chair, some lessons he’s learned throughout his career, working in the horror genre, Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, creating a unique version of an Ouija board, and much more.
