Capitalizing on the trending Backrooms phenomenon, filmmaker Alex Magaña has released a 4-minute short aptly titled âBackrooms.â
Itâs one character, one location, and continues with the effective simplicity of the Kane Parsons creation.
Franchised Horror
A woman named Claire (Sarah Short) enters a parking garage. She looks like she just finished work and is ready to get in her car and go home. Weâve all been there.
In true Backrooms style, the entrance seals off behind her. The garage is empty, save for the shadows and the glow of exits signs that point to nowhere. A robotic voice over a PA system announces that all exits will be closing soon in an ominous tone. Will Claire find a way out in time?
Perfect Aesthetics
Parking garages are creepy on their own. Theyâre dark, repetitive, and seemingly endless labyrinths of cement walls and random doors. Alex Magaña takes the simple setting and dials up the tension with excellent shots tracking Claire as she frantically searches for a way out.
Itâs a nice change to see a female protag in a Backrooms story. Sarah Short is the only character on screen and does an excellent job of looking befuddled and expressing terror with her eyes.
The sound is minimal, with the clicking of Claireâs heels against the cement serving as a reminder of how isolated she is. I would love to see Sarah Short in more horror films.
I enjoy these movies. This iteration of âBackroomsâ offers the same fun and spooky feel of the others. Fans of the series will thoroughly enjoy. Horror movie season is coming!
