Trailer Review: ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Whets the Appetite of ‘Matrix’ Fans with New Teaser Trailer

It’s hard to believe that another “Matrix” film will soon arrive, but that time is almost upon us. Fans have just been treated to the first official trailer of “The Matrix Resurrections” by Director Lana Wachowski. It offers another glimpse into the lives of these characters that fans have come to know and love. “The Matrix” is largely regarded as a massive achievement in action filmmaking. While “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” may not be as widely appreciated, both are still inspired films.

Certainly, it’s hard to imagine following the events of “The Matrix Revolutions” that we’re at this point. Without revealing spoilers, the trilogy explored in detail the answer to the question Neo posed to Trinity: what is The Matrix? Viewers joined Neo as he followed the white rabbit, and explored the depth of who he was meant to be. He ultimately made a choice, which led to what seemed like a fitting conclusion to the series. After considering the idea for a bit, the trailer opening with Reeves as Thomas Anderson rather than Neo might make sense. The story could perhaps go on.

The return of Neo?

The trailer reveals Anderson to be living in a similar state as how he began “The Matrix,” seemingly quite unsettled. Rather than searching for Morpheus, he describes having dreams. These dreams ultimately lead him, it appears, to look for answers once again. Neo encounters Trinity; and while it seems they view each other as strangers, there is something, some kind of pull or force between them. The trailer also shows an encounter with  Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking on the role), in a scene inspired by “The Matrix.” Interestingly, Morpheus seems not to offer Neo a choice this time, but the red pill directly. Additionally, Jessica Henwick portrays Bugs, and she reminds of Belinda McClory (Switch) from “The Matrix.”

In a terrific use of background music, (“White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane), as the trailer progresses, action shots grow more exciting and match the increasing intensity of the music. It felt exciting to watch. I can’t wait to see Neo and Trinity, along with a few other familiar faces in “The Matrix Resurrections.” I’ll admit, I’m still a bit lost as to how exactly we got here, but I have an open mind. It looks like things come full circle, and as a longtime fan of the trilogy, I can’t wait.
