Press ReleaseâNow streaming on Paramount + and Prime Video, âRideâ is an independent crime/drama written by Jake Allyn and Josh Plasse, and directed by Allyn. The film is set in Stephenville, TXâa real locationâand uses the sport of bull riding to help raise money for a familyâs young daughter to receive treatment at a better cancer hospital.Â
Focusing on the sport of Rodeo, Allyn mentioned in an interview with Texas Standard the story of âRideâ was something that had been inside of him for a long time, waiting to come out. Allyn also added he’s a Dallas native, and âRideâ was his directorial debut.Â
Standout Performances
âRideâ has been received well by critics. It earned a 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes and even a 3 star review by Marya E. Gates of RogerEbert.com, per Wikipedia. Additionally, Joe Leyden of Variety noted that Allynâs debut also had several standout performances, who felt comfortable and credible in both the Rodeo scenes and the crime scenes. This is high praise. From my time spent reviewing Texas filmmaker Brett Bentman’s filmsâwho also excelled in thisâset design and authenticity on indie films can be hard with a scant budget.Â
In addition to co-writing and directing, Allyn also plays âPeterâ in the film. Heâs backed by an extensive cast, featuring C. Thomas Howell, Forrie J. Smith, co-writer Josh Plasse, Walter J. Buck, Liz Atwater, Annabelle Gish, Zia Carlock, and Rome Carlock. Of note, Joe Leyden noted in his review that Smith and Howell were exemplary and featured much verisimilitude.Â
